The WPC strengthens its international profile before the Diplomatic Corps in Madrid

The World Pistachio Congress (WPC) continues to strengthen its international profile ahead of its first edition, to be held on 27–28 January 2027 at the Toledo Conference Centre (Palacio de Congresos de Toledo). As part of the "Road to the WPC" initiative, the project's organisers presented the Congress's main highlights to members of the Diplomatic Corps in Madrid representing some of the world's leading pistachio-producing countries.

The event was attended by Juan Miguel del Real, Chair of the WPC Organising Committee, while Ricardo Migueláñez, General Coordinator of the Congress, presented the project and the key features of an event that will bring together growers, industry, traders, researchers, technical experts and institutions from the main producing and consuming countries.

The presentation was attended by representatives from the embassies of some of the world's leading producers, namely the United States, Iran, Turkey and Jordan. The participation of the United States and Turkey, which together with Iran rank among the world's top pistachio producers, reflects the international scope the Congress aims to achieve.

The diplomatic representatives were also invited to take an active role in the Congress and in promoting it in their respective countries, as the WPC will be inviting their ministers of agriculture to join the Honorary Committee, whose national section has already been established.

"We want the WPC to be a meeting point for all stakeholders across the pistachio value chain, enabling the exchange of knowledge, experience and perspectives between the main producing and consuming countries. The Congress's international dimension is essential to addressing the sector's challenges and opportunities from a global standpoint, and to making joint progress in areas such as boosting consumption, highlighting the health benefits of pistachios and developing new consumption options. Along this path, consumers must take centre stage, because they are the final recipients of all the work carried out along the chain, from production to processing, to deliver a quality product," said Juan Miguel del Real, Chair of the WPC Organising Committee.

In just a few years, pistachios have gone from an emerging crop to a leading player in Spanish agriculture. Today, the global pistachio market accounts for 1.3 million tonnes and USD 10.3 billion a year, and is expected to reach 1.5 million tonnes by 2035. Spain adds around 8,500 new hectares every year, and Castilla-La Mancha accounts for approximately 80% of national production, positioning the region to become the European hub of the sector.

This growth opens up opportunities but also raises shared challenges, from sustainability to quality, health and market access, which call for knowledge, innovation and international cooperation. In this context, the WPC aims to become a permanent platform for knowledge and cooperation between producing and consuming countries, connecting every link in the value chain.
