Autumn insurance sign-up opens with improved cover for olive groves and nuts

Agroseguro held an information day in Seville on the technical changes to the agricultural insurance lines that are taken out in autumn, aimed at professionals from the co-insurance companies and their sales networks in the region.

Sílvia Marques, Agroseguro's Production and Marketing Director, opened the event by highlighting the strong sign-up figures for 2026 — up 2% to date — as well as the trend towards taking out policies such as those for fruit trees and citrus earlier in order to secure protection against early-season losses.

She also stressed the importance of the policies taken out in autumn for the 2027 season, citing as an example the record number of storms and floods recorded last winter.

For his part, Agroseguro's Regional Director for Andalusia, Juan Francisco Delgado, recalled that, following the succession of storm fronts at the start of the year and the much-needed water it brought to woody and irrigated crops, "there has been hardly any rainfall, which is causing great uncertainty among farmers and livestock producers, with a summer that is dragging on far longer than it should".

Indeed, the event highlighted the clear risk of drought in Andalusia — among other regions — precisely because of the shortage of rain since April.

Technical changes to the arable, olive grove and nut insurance lines

Agroseguro technical staff Miguel Ruiz and Sergio Valencia set out the changes to the autumn insurance lines. Among the main improvements to arable crop insurance for the 2027 season is a change to the sign-up closing dates for certain modules and crops (winter cereals, sunflower, camelina), either to align them better with the crop cycle or to reduce the overlap between the sign-up period and the risk of hail.

In addition, the 2026 Plan has raised the insured prices for crops such as pardina and castellana lentils, camelina, Albufera rice and various sunflower varieties, which translates into higher compensation in the event of a loss.

Olive grove insurance for the next two harvests (2027/28 and 2028/29) brings significant progress: close to 90% of olive growers insured in previous seasons will maintain or improve their policy terms (yields, risk level, and so on), and half of them will even increase their guaranteed cover. Cover has also been improved for olive growers taking out a policy for the first time.

Nut insurance likewise includes measures to encourage sign-up and to provide cover against early-season losses, together with a significant increase — of 11% — in the insured price for almonds.

Claims payments of close to €50 million in 2026

In total, estimated agricultural insurance claims payments in Andalusia for losses recorded up to September 2026 come close to €50 million, with the greatest impact on vegetables (€10.2 million), arable crops (€8.4 million), olive groves (€8.3 million), citrus (€7 million) and strawberries and berries (€5.3 million). Livestock insurance lines account for a further €7.9 million.

Although more than 75% of the compensation has already been paid out, in some cases these figures are minimal and provisional, since the season for certain crops is still open and losses are unpredictable.

Agroseguro stresses that agricultural insurance is a tool that brings certainty and stability to the farming sector, which is why the public authorities (central and regional government) have been stepping up their support for sign-up through subsidies which, in 2025, together reached an average of 45% of the cost of the policy.

On this point, Natalia Grisalvo, Head of the Agricultural Insurance and Adverse Weather Service at the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, recalled that the budget announced by the Regional Government of Andalusia for this year (€16 million) extends the direct subsidy — applied at the time the policy is taken out — to three further lines: strawberries and berries, outdoor vegetables and forestry, with a commitment to subsidise every agricultural insurance policy at the point of sign-up under the forthcoming 2027 plan.
